Update on How Travel Insurance Covers Swine Flu

by Steve Dasseos, The Trip Insurance Guru on April 29, 2009

Here’s an update to my 4/27/09 post “How Does Travel Insurance Cover Swine Flu?”

With 3 exceptions, of the plans we sell & trust*, the key date is April 23, 2009:

If you had bought a travel / trip insurance policy before April 23, 2009 and you first contract Swine Flu while you’re on your trip, all of TripInsuranceStore.com’s plans will cover you under the medical portion of your travel insurance policy provided you seek the initial treatment on your trip.

If you bought a travel / trip insurance policy after April 23, 2009 you will not be covered if you first contract Swine Flu on your trip because it’s not an unforeseen event.

* The three exceptions are Travelex, Travel Guard & TravelSafe.

If your Travelex, Travel Guard & TravelSafe policies were purchased before you contracted Swine Flu (or any othere disease), you can be covered for trip cancellation if your sickness took a turn for the worse and your doctor advised you against traveling.

If an insured is on a trip and contracts the Swine Flu, they are covered up to the plan limits for medical expense incurred as the result of their illness, subject to the plan provisions and exclusions.

If this Swine Flu outbreak is officially declared to be an epidemic or pandemic, then coverage from that time forward will not provide benefits as there are specific exclusions for epidemics and pandemics in our policies.

You can see my updated Epidemic page here, too.

I’ll update with more information as it becomes available.
