Rental Car Insurance For 4 Wheel Drive Exploring

by Steve Dasseos, The Trip Insurance Guru on January 6, 2009

I’ve read in your blog that your Collision Damage Waiver does cover dirt roads for normal use of the car. I saw that you only allow US & Canadian residents to take this insurance. Is there any way I can get your rental car insurance?

I’m a 41 year old Belgian and I’m planning a trip to Utah and Arizona in the summer of 2010, where I’d like to do some exploring with a 4WD (Chevrolet Trailblazer or Ford Explorer). In order to get there I need to take dirt roards. But, no Belgian insurance can insure a car with a non-Belgian license plate. And I don’t want to pay the extra amount the rental car agency wants.

Is there any way you could insure my normal driving on dirtroads? Thanks, Dirk

Hi Dirk, As you have found out, you must physically reside in the US or Canada for the 6 months prior to getting our Collision Damage Waiver plan.

Your only option is to buy the CDW and Liability coverage from the rental car agency. They want to charge you extra because doing “some exploring with a 4WD” in Utah and Arizona carries a greater risk than regular street and highway driving.

Even if you were a US or Canadian resident, you still would not be able to get our Collision Damage Waiver plan. That’s because 4 Wheel Drive vehicles are excluded from our rental car insurance.
