How to Opt Out of Facebook’s Instant Personalization

by Steve Dasseos, The Trip Insurance Guru on April 23, 2010

Do you use Facebook and want to keep your personal information private? I do and while I don’t mind sharing my details, I prefer to be the one who decides what, where and when that happens.

I heard about Facebook’s Instant Personalization today along with how to opt out of it.

Not surprisingly, Facebook “conveniently” checked the “Allow” checkbox for Instant Personalization in your privacy settings. If you don’t want the websites that you or your Facebook friends visit to know your information, you must opt out.

Unchecking the “Allow” box is not enough because you must block each Instant Personalization website to fully opt out.

And, as is usually the case, the instructions don’t exactly work. But, I figured it out. And until Facebook changes it, this will work:

How to Opt Out of Facebook’s Instant Personalization

1) Log into your Facebook account.

2) Go to http://www.facebook.com/help/?page=1068

Note: If you get a “Connection was reset” message, try again. I suspect millions of people are doing the same thing.

3) Look down to “How do I opt-out of instant personalization?”

4) Click on the link. It will say:

You can opt-out of instant personalization by disallowing it here. By clicking “No Thanks” on the Facebook notification on partner sites, partners will delete your data. To prevent your friends from sharing any of your information with an instant personalization partner, block the application: Microsoft Docs.com, Pandora, Yelp.

5) Each of those words: Microsoft Docs.com, Pandora, Yelp are links. Click each one and you’ll go to their page where you can opt out.

6) After opting out, click the back button to do the next one.

7) Check back periodically to see which new sites Facebook “conveniently” added you to.

I hope this makes sense.
