I used to buy certain products because the Mail-In Rebate convinced me it was a better deal. It’s a good deal if you got the rebate 100% of the time with no hassle. Ocassionally, I got the rebate, but, in my experience, most of the time I’d either miss the deadline to apply for the rebate or I’d never get the rebate.
Finally, in 2007, I stopped buying items with a mail-in rebate. In fact, I steer clear of buying anything with a mail-in rebate. I thought it was the right decision, but now I know it was thanks to Asa Aarons’ very timely and useful article called Rebate Rights: Don’t Lose Out
