Does Travel Insurance Cover You Without a Passport?

by Steve Dasseos, The Trip Insurance Guru on December 7, 2009

Very confused… We need a plan to cover us if our Southwest Airline flight’s delayed too long and we miss our cruise’s sailing. We cannot catch up to the cruise as we are traveling without passports (I know…). The trip delay / missed connection / trip interruption rules are confusing. Can you help me figure out which plan will cover the components listed? Thanks, Colleen

Hi Colleen,

Yes, you’re right, the trip delay / missed connection / trip interruption rules are confusing. And the policy wording varies from plan to plan which makes it harder to keep it all straight.

In your case, you don’t need to understand those rules. The fact the airline won’t let you fly to a foreign destination without a passport means travel insurance will not cover you.

In other words, your traveling without passports, which makes you ineligible to fly to get caught up to your trip is not a covered event / reason.

Therefore any claim related to your being forbidden to fly due to not having passports will not be paid.

I hope this makes sense. If not, call us at 1-888-407-3854 and we’ll help you figure it all out.
