Does Rebooking My Cruise Reset My Initial Deposit Date?

by Steve Dasseos, The Trip Insurance Guru on May 4, 2009

Dear Steve, we are in the process of switching our reservation from Holland America to AAA as it is $120 cheaper!! I will confirm this on Friday with a deposit and then call you. So I am assuming I have 10 days or so to get the travel insurance and that would cover preexisting conditions. Am I right? Sharon

Hi Sharon,

Switching the cruise to a different travel agent doesn’t neccessarily re-set the initial trip deposit date. If any of the money you paid previously is either transferred or applied to your new cruise’s booking, the original deposit date will be the same.

The only way it’s treated as a new cruise & new deposit date is if you can show documentation that:

  • You completely cancelled the first cruise and
  • received 100% of your money back as either a credit card credit or in the form of a check made payable to you

Then, sometime after that date you book a new cruise. If you don’t book a new cruise, the travel insurance company will treat it as a change of the original booking and you will not have a new initial trip deposit date.

I hope this makes sense.
