Another Update on How Travel Insurance Covers Swine Flu

by Steve Dasseos, The Trip Insurance Guru on May 1, 2009

Here’s an update to my 4/29/09 post “Update on How Travel Insurance Covers Swine Flu”. Check out this page, too: http://www.tripinsurancestore.com/3/epidemic.shtml.

Pertaining to Swine Flu, the only way you can be sure that you won’t lose money by being forced to cancel your trip is if you have a “Cancel For Any Reason” plan. One Swine Flu risk is that you’re not sick, but due to government actions you can’t travel. The only travel insurance plan that will help you is a “Cancel For Any Reason” plan. Here’s more information: http://www.tripinsurancestore.com/cfar.shtml.

Worried About Swine Flu? Here are what plans we sell & trust are saying (as of 5/1/09):

  • CSA, HTH, Travelex, Travel Guard, Travel Insured & TravelSafe:

    • If your CSA, HTH, Travelex, Travel Guard, Travel Insured & TravelSafe policies were purchased before you contracted Swine Flu (or any othere disease), you can be covered for trip cancellation if your sickness took a turn for the worse and your doctor advised you against traveling.

    • If an insured is on a trip and contracts the Swine Flu, they are covered up to the plan limits for medical expense incurred as the result of their illness, subject to the plan provisions and exclusions.

    • However, with the exception of Travelex & Travel Guard, if this Swine Flu outbreak is officially declared to be an epidemic or pandemic, then CSA, HTH, Travel Insured & TravelSafe coverage from that time forward will not provide benefits as there are specific exclusions for epidemics and pandemics in their policies.

  • Important: Other than if you have a “Cancel For Any Reason” plan, cancellation or interruption due to the concern of contracting the Swine Flu is not covered. This includes being afraid to travel. Cancellation or Interruption due to Sickness requires documentation by the attending physician.

If you got travel / trip insurance through your travel agent I suggest you call them to find out how you would be covered.

You can get the lastest Swine Flu information on CDC’s website: http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu

I hope this helps & makes sense.
