If You Are Unexpectedly Laid Off
Travel Insurance can cover you for trip cancellation if you are unexpectedly hit by a cement truck and your doctor says you can't travel. But, what about your work place and employment? What if you are laid off or have an involuntary termination?
You have 2 choices if you are laid off:
Go on your trip because you'll need a vacation. What's the likelihood that your new boss will say "Sure, go ahead and take your vacation, even though no one else here is taking a trip" ? Cancel your vacation because you need the money. Or, even if you could afford the trip, you won't want to pay for all the spending that will take place on your trip.

If You Are Unexpectedly Laid Off:

Pre-Departure Trip Cancellation
We will pay a Pre-Departure Trip Cancellation Benefit, up to the amount in the Schedule, if, for a covered reason that occurs before departure on your Trip and while coverage is in effect, you are prevented from taking your Trip.
Covered reasons for Pre-Departure Trip Cancellation are:
... or 3) for Other Covered Events, as defined.
"Other Covered Events" means only the following unforeseeable events or their consequences which occur while coverage is in effect under this Policy:
4. a change in plans by you, an Immediate Family Member traveling with you, or Traveling Companion resulting from one of the following events which occurs while coverage is in effect under this Policy:
i) Involuntary employer termination or layoff affecting You or a person(s) sharing the same room with You during Your Trip. Employment must have been with the same employer for at least 1 continuous year; This provision is not applicable to temporary employment, independent contractors or self-employed persons;

TRIP CANCELLATION
The Company will pay a benefit, up to the maximum shown on the Confirmation of Coverage, if You are prevented from taking or unable to continue Your Covered Trip due to:
(g) You are terminated, or laid off from employment subject to three (3) years of continuous employment at the place of employment where terminated.

TRIP CANCELLATION AND INTERRUPTION
The Insurer will pay a benefit, up to the Maximum Limit shown on the Schedule, if an Insured cancels his/her Trip or is unable to continue on his/her Trip due to the following Unforeseen events:
(n) the Insured or Traveling Companion is involuntarily terminated or laid off through no fault of his or her own, provided that he or she has been an active employee for the same employer for at least one year. Termination must occur following the effective date of coverage. This provision is not applicable to temporary employment, independent contractors or selfemployed persons.

Trip Cancellation/Trip Interruption:
The Insurer will pay a benefit, up to the maximum shown on the Schedule of Coverage and Services, if You are prevented from taking or continuing Your Trip due to the following Unforeseen events
d) You or Your Traveling Companion are terminated or laid off from employment subject to three years of continuous employment at the place of employment where terminated.
Here's How the Travel Insured $24 Per Person
Optional Cancel For Work Reasons Upgrade Works:
You must get this upgrade no later than 21 calendar days after your initial trip deposit date for the WTP plan or no later than 30 calendar days for the Gold plan after your initial trip deposit date. It must be added at the time of original plan purchase - you cannot add it later.
Not available for residents of Washington State
If You have purchased the Cancel for Work Reasons Protection the Insurer will pay up to the maximum shown on the Schedule of Coverage and Services if You or Your Traveling Companion are prevented from taking Your Trip due to one of the following unforeseen events:
1) You or Your Traveling Companion are required to work during Your scheduled Trip. You must demonstrate proof of requirement to work, such as a notarized statement signed by an officer of Your or Your Traveling Companion's employer.
2) Your or Your Traveling Companion's company being made unsuitable for Work by fire, flood, burglary, vandalism or Natural Disaster.
3) Your or Your Traveling Companion's company being directly involved in a merger or acquisition. You or Your Traveling Companion must be an active employee of the company that is merging and You or Your Traveling Companion must be involved in such an event.
4) The employer with whom You or Your Traveling Companion were employed on Your Effective Date transfers You or Your Traveling Companion more than 250 miles and You or Your Traveling Companion are required to relocate Your or Your Traveling Companion's primary residence.
5) You or Your Traveling Companion are terminated or laid off from employment subject to one year of continuous employment at the place of employment where terminated.
Note: For any child to qualify for benefits under the Cancel for Work Reasons Upgrade, coverage must be purchased and paid for each child covered under the Gold plan. Children 17 & under are covered for free on the WTP plan.
